Frequently Asked Questions
What is a doula?
A birth doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support to a person during their labor and delivery. A doula can provide reassurance and perspective to you and your support person, make suggestions for labor progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning and other techniques for your comfort. A doula is independent and self-employed, and as such, is working for YOU, not your caregiver or place of birth.
Do you only support home births/births without medical pain management?
We support all people giving birth whether that be at home with a midwife, at a birth center or at a hospital.
What is the Dual-Doula Model™️?
The Dual-Doula Model™️ means you have two doulas. Both Morgan and Rebecca attend all prenatal and postpartum meetings with you. Rebecca and Morgan switch around every 12 hours so that you have a fresh, well rested doula. If two people are in labor at the same time, you will have Rebecca or Morgan for your entire labor.
How can you help someone having a cesarean?
We provide support before, during and after scheduled and unscheduled cesareans. We can support physically by holding a hand, giving acupressure. mentally by explaining what is happening to the birthing person during prep/surgery/recovery, and emotionally, because having a baby while also having major surgery is not typically the easiest thing to do.
Do I choose one of you or do I get both of you?
When working with The Doula Duo, you get both of us for prenatal appointments and the post birth check in. We both communicate with you throughout your pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum. During labor, you will typically see one of us at a time (usually Rebecca is daytime hours, Morgan covers nighttime hours) but sometimes we are both there to care for you.
How many people do you take with the same estimated due date/month and what happens if two people are in labor at the same time?
Estimated due dates are exactly that; an estimate. That means that someone who is due on 1/1 and someone who is due on 2/1 could both safely deliver on the exact same day (one goes 2 weeks after estimated due date and one goes 2 weeks before estimated due date). We currently take up to 4 estimated due dates per month.
If two people are in labor at the same time, Morgan will stay with one person and Rebecca will stay with the other person. In the rare chance (1/85 births so far!) that there are two people in labor at the same time AND Morgan and Rebecca have been at the births for over 24 hours, they will call in another local doula/s to support one or both families.
What is a full spectrum doula?
Full spectrum doula refers to doulas that support families through the entire spectrum of reproduction including fertility, pregnancy, loss, terminations, birth and postpartum.
